The facts...

The legal client acquisition landscape is evolving super-quickly.

The shift toward digitally-reliant ways of doing business - a process that was already underway prior to March 2020 - has been exponentially accelerated by the recent health crisis.

The result?

A widespread digitalisation and delocalisation of most business practices, particularly where service-based businesses in all areas and verticals are concerned.

While Zoom has quickly become a widely accepted channel for almost every type of business interaction - from meetings to sales calls to consultations - many law firms have been given a new opportunity to widen the geographical scope of their service delivery, with digital marketing channels establishing themselves as the perfect medium for reaching an unprecedented volume of prospects independently of physical locations.

BUT THERE'S MORE...

As a result of the pandemic, user behaviour has evolved at incredible speed, with online spending - be it for products or services - growing by 74% in the 10 months between March 2020 and January 2021.

In essence: today more than ever, users will turn to the internet to search for, review and choose a service provider.  Physical proximity is no longer a determining factor when it comes to choosing a service provider and - according to the Office for National Statistics - legal services are no exception.

The bottom line?

In a radically transformed post-pandemic world, those who are quick to adapt to this new digital-centric business landscape are destined to thrive.

On the other hand, those who insist on relying on outdated client acquisition and service delivery practices will struggle to survive, and will eventually succumb to the radical changes brought on by an evolutionary process that's only going to get faster and more radical as time goes by.

Most legal professionals and firms have already taken steps in this direction by strengthening their digital presence, exploring the opportunities presented by old and new digital channels, and widening the geographical scope of their client acquisition.

So, the question begs.

How ready are you for the client acquisition revolution the legal services world is undergoing RIGHT NOW?

The past

Still hoping and praying for word-of-mouth to see you through?

Thanks to new regulations introduced by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in 2019, solicitors are now able to offer their services on a freelance basis, which translates into much more fierce, aggressive competition for all legal service providers.

Add to this the emergence of a new breed of clients - particularly millennials - who rely heavily on digital channels to seek and evaluate new service providers, and you'll quickly come to appreciate how standing out in the current landscape without a strategic digital presence has become very, very hard - if not impossible.

Today, 96% of users search for legal services online, and 70% of law firms have clearly stated that they generate new cases through their website (Source: Digital Media Stream).

Despite these numbers, a staggering number of law firms still don't have a strategically-crafted digital media presence, and are still relying on obsolete client acquisition practices that offer no revenue predictability or stability.

The bottom line? It's not too late to ride the wave of digitalisation that's taking over the legal world today.

the boring stuff...

A word on compliance with the Code for Solicitors, Code of Conduct for Firms, RELs and RFLs

In the UK, it is perfectly acceptable for legal service providers to promote their services in compliance with SRA standards and regulations.

However, crucially, in order to avoid regulatory action you or your marketing service providers must be fully aware of a number of specific regulatory requirements that apply to the promotion of legal services.

Paragraph 8.9 of the Code for Solicitors, RELs and RFLs places particular emphasis on the transparent, non-targeted and non-intrusive nature of all marketing messages.

While unsolicited direct approaches to members of the public are not permitted, with the exception of current and former clients, legal services can be promoted online and via social media platforms, as none of these channels target users on an individual basis and are therefore considered to be non-intrusive.

Confused as to what's permitted?
